Evaluation of the novel

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is one of the most appreciated and well known British literature novels out there. It is read in high schools all over the world, and personally I do not think that it should stop being the case. Frankenstein is a fun, interesting and deep book filled with romantisicist scenes and a heartfelt story that fills you with empathy. The other day, in our in-class socratic seminar, we had the opportunity to discuss about the novel overall. Frankenstein is without a doubt a novel you have to really understand background context to actually get and appreciate. If we hadn't read the Rime of the Ancient Mariner or learned about Shelley's past, Prometheus and even Paradise Lost, we simply would not get the same effect. This is another reason why Frankenstein was really popular in that specific time. Those were things you knew because of the culture you grew up around. In class we discussed if we thought that it would become popular if it were to be published in our time and age. Here is where I think two times, because to be honest, I do not think it would be the same. Part of the reason why Frankenstein is really popular and well known is because it is simply a classic. It was the first of its kind, it shows us something we had never seen before. The way Mary Shelley shows us Romanticism and gives us a fresh story (for her time) is something that would not be looked at two times in our current time period. However, that doesn't take away the grandeur that Frankenstein was in the past. Passed on generation by generation, Frankenstein is unique to other works from its time. It has set boundaries and influenced many other novels not only in British literature, but in art itself, and this is why skipping this interesting read in my opinion is a mistake.
